Tumeric: - anti-inflammatory agent to treat a wide variety of conditions, including flatulence, jaundice, menstrual difficulties, bloody urine, hemorrhage, toothache, bruises, chest pain, and colic. Also antioxidant preventing cancer, some studies shows that it decreases the risk of Alzheimer’s, lowers cholesterol and help with inflammatory bowel disease and rheumatoid arthritis.
Mustard Seeds: - anti-inflammatory, protection against GI cancer. The high amount of selenium is great for repairing tissues, wound healing and a healthy thyroid.
Red Chilli powder: - Contains Vitamin A & C, B6 and folic acid. Helps with de-congestion, preventing colon cancer and is a powerful antioxidant.
Cumin seeds: - Aides in boosting immune function, cancer prevention, digestion. There is a high amount of iron in this.
Asafoetida (Hing):- It is anti-epileptic, antimicrobial, laxative, anti-inflammatory, expectorant, antispasmodic and anti-flatulent agent.
Red/Green Chilli: Contain high amounts of vitamin A, C and K. Helps maintain a healthy gut an improve immunity.
Basil: - Has high amounts of Vitamin K. It has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Some studies show protection against heart disease. Choose fresh compared to dried.
Oregano: - Also known for anti-bacterial and anti-oxidant properties. Again, choose fresh compared to dried. Tip: Add fresh sprigs to olive oil and this will infuse the oil with the essence of the herb.
Thyme: - High in Vitamin C and antioxidant f, anti-carcinogenic. Interestingly, found to be antimicrobial so great for naturally preserving foods.
Nutmeg: - Properties to relieve pain, soothe indigestion, strengthen cognitive function, detoxify the body, boost skin health, alleviate oral conditions, reduce insomnia, increase immune system function and improve blood circulation.
Cinnamon: - It has anti-microbial and anti-clotting properties. Some evidence supports the use in blood sugar control. It is powerful olfactory stimuli to brain activity.
Ginger: Decreases feelings of dizziness, nausea. It has properties of anti-inflammatory and cancer protecting especially for colorectal cancer. Some studies showed death of cancer cells in ovarian cancer. Effective in immune boosting action especially during colds.
Works well in daily use along with garlic as a paste. Add to most soups, gravies, curries, chutneys.
Garlic: Excellent source of manganese and vitamin B6. It is protective against cardiac disease and cancer. It has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiviral properties. Interestingly, crushing and chopping garlic releases its enzymes not whole garlic. It should be noted that this is how most Indians prepare their dishes.
